What Inspires You: Interview with Dilly Pad.

1. Please tell us a little bit about what you do.

"I am a clay sculptor and artist. Specifically, I work with polymer clay, as I like the texture and feel of polymer over other kinds of clay. My love for creating sculptures began as a motivation to have beautiful timeless art pieces without having to pay those exclusive prices I would see online and in art galleries. So, I went out and bought a box of clay one day, trying to somewhat replicate a piece I saw selling for over $900 online, and found that I actually could make a sculpture not similar, but much better than the sculptures I found. My first reaction was 'Why are these items selling for these outrageous prices?' And my second thought was 'It is not fair that only people with unlimited budgets can have beautiful art.' In my opinion, art should be available to everyone, as art is something that can make you feel at home and that says a lot about the individual and their own style. Of course, my friends saw the work I did and wanted some of my flower and tile sculptures too, thus my motivation for starting my online Etsy shop."

2. Your decision to work monochromatically takes each piece to a very high art, sculptural place. What informed this choice?

"My favorite color to work with is pure and simple white. Although I know that there exists endless color combinations in polymer, I still feel most comfortable and satisfied using the monochromatic palette that is timeless, clean and classic. I have turned down requests to make pieces in various colors simply for the fact that I am not comfortable using a range of colors in my work only because I believe the details get lost and the sculptures looses the beauty and sophistication that only the white palette can capture. With how fast trends are changing and the demand to constantly replace decor for the newest fads and color combinations, I want my sculptures to be permanent pieces of art that go with your decor throughout the years. "

3.  Keeping our work fresh means constantly seeking new sources of inspiration. Where do you look to find it and/ or what kinds of sources most inspire you?

"I find inspiration in everyday things. From taking a walk with my two children and finding an interesting branch or textured pebble to finding an interestingly textured plant. But also, I find great inspiration in the ocean. More specifically, coral reef plants provide most of my inspiration. There is a plethora of species with amazing details and patterns that motivate me to create a similar texture in my work."

I can't help but wonder if they've been staring at elementClayStudio on Etsy who works in porcelain. :/
