While I was painting the main level last week, I decided to finish the guest room too. This room was actually what inspired us to go with grey for the living areas of the house since we just fell in love with the color in here.
But color inspiration aside, I had been stumped with decorating this room for a while. Now, I LOVE color and I wanted to add pops of teal & green in here. The hubs though not so much since I tend to go a bit crazy for teal. He suggested more of a neutral palette, which I was totally against at first.
"But how can brown match grey?" I cried.
"The floors are brown, and they look good with the grey."
"Yes, but, but, but...teal!"
So I decided to just suck it up and try it out, so I ordered brown fabric for the curtains, still not convinced.
And I made them, 3 throw pillows and 1 curtain, all on faith and faith alone. (Might I say I'm pretty proud of my sewing skills here? I took measurements & whipped these up sans pattern!)
I flipped back to this pattern in my Project Sewing 101 book to create 3 coordinating throw pillows with button closures too.
Spot the 3rd pillow there? I'm so excited to create a little reading nook in this room too. And of course the kitties were being cute watching birds flit about outside in my secret garden.
There's still a bit of work to be done in this room, but I see now how it's coming together. I've decided to include those pops of green & teal on a much, much smaller scale in this room just to brighten it up a bit. But the hubs got his way, mostly.
Next project on this list in here: This is a cedar bench my dad made me when I was a little girl. It's taken a beating from our various kitties climbing on it through the years (you can probably spot the wood filler I've got going). The plan is to sand it down some, and paint it a nice bright white. Then I'll make a bench pad using the same brown fabric, and add one of those throw pillows to finish it off.
After that:
- Thrift a small nightstand, paint it bright green.
- Hang curtain.
- Put a brown/ blue rug we have in this room, or just find a small matt for the door.
- Move mirror over the bed.
- Hang more art
So as you can see, I've got my work cut out for me. But it's fun work!

Looks great. I love the way you've combined the fabrics -- and the teal of the lampshade really pops. Great job.
Where did you get the fabric? I can never find cute home dec fabric like that. I LOVE the fabric!!!!

Awesome job! I love that little bench your father made...lucky girl!
It turned out great! Your guests aren't going to want to leave! :) The grey kitties look purrfect in there too!
I love your fabric choices, While it's not as colorful as you wanted at first I think the variety of patters make up for it.
That bench at the foot of the bed is beautiful as well.
The pillows and curtains look great!! And I love that bench your dad made!
It looks good so far! Teal is one of my absolutely favorite colors, too. The brown/grey is nice, and a few pops of teal will really bring it all together. I love your pillows. Best of luck with the remaining projects for this room. (Of course your kitties are adorable as always.)
LOVE those pillows!
The curtains turned out great as did the pillows! I love the white pillow with the small print and brown stripe in matching larger print :)
It looks fantastic! Can I come over and stay? So cozy :). I love the fabrics. I have the same prints in a different colorway.
Gosh that is cute fabric. It looks like Queen Anne's Lace.
The room is looking beautiful Nancy! Nice sewing jobs!!! The bench you dad made it fabulous. I am sure he will appreciate you giving it new life. Hopefully the kitties keep their claws off it.

The room looks great! I love the fabric combinations, and that sweet bench is wonderful! And, hey, a girl's got to have a little teal in her life ; )
The kitties are even color coordinated for your home remodel!
The fabrics and colours are so harmonious...thumbs up to your guest room! Lucky guests staying here :)
The pillow selection is too cute!!
Too bad the chest has those spots of white on it. You could paint it teal instead of white. Just a thought... I really like the reading nook too. {:-D
Everything looks fantastic, Nancy! I would not think brown and gray together, but I think it looks great. Your bench is so sweet, It will look great white.
